Apparently this is a concept known since the beginning of your activity.
However, it seems to me that it can be very confused with concepts of
"spirit" existing in other religions and
philosophies.
Let's look at the definitions we have:
The conscious unity of consciousness that has all potentialities but
no mass, no wavelength, and no location.
The Thetan (spirit) is described as having no mass, no wavelength, no
energy, and no time or location in space except by
consideration
or postulate. Spirit is not a thing. He is the creator of things.
Ultimately, what is this
thing called thetan? It is simply YOU before you have created an image of
yourself and that is
the most useful definition I
know.
What does this mean? It simply means that your identification with something
material, whether it is even the most diaphanous energy, is not a thetan.
In all religions and mysticisms this happens: the spirit is identified with
something material.
Although terms such as "diaphanous", "ethereal", etc. are used, all these
are elements of the physical universe and therefore is not a thetan.
The total inability of the human being to confront the void, leads him to
always try to associate something physical with the spirit. And even worse,
for himself, it is very difficult to just "be" without creating an image of
himself.
The thetan is a creator and, by its need to "have", it often appears to us
"wrapped" in creations, images, ridges, etc. We give this the general name
of "masses." But let's not confuse this with the thetan itself.
The thetan is only what observes and decides. It is difficult, until you
reach the highest levels of the bridge, to conceive that something that has
no form, without energy or mass and without any mechanism, can be something
so powerful.
In order for a thetan to truly assume an identity, it will have to see
things from the point of view of something in the universe in which it wants
to move.
A thetan can thus assume itself at a certain point and observe from there.
The most common case is to take a point of view on a body in the physical
universe to be able to interact with others and with the Universe.
But the state of the human being is artificial, the thetan using the body
for its own pleasure and convenience. A thetan, after having done so,
usually forgets it and, in order to increase its degree of unpredictability,
suppresses the fact that it is separate from the body, but all it will ever
be, is a thetan.
There are several
degrees of operation of a Thetan.
What we call the
operant thetan (OT) is a thetan, which may or may not have a body, but which
is external to it, and which does not need it to control or deal with
thought, life, matter, energy, space and time.
It can operate
totally independent of the body whether it has one or not. He is now
himself, not dependent on the universe around him.
Operant means
"able to operate without depending on other things" and thetan is the Greek
letter theta (q), which the Greeks used to represent
"thought" or perhaps "spirit", to which was added an "n" to turn it into a
new noun.
